Assistant Designer – Communications Engineering

Reporting to the Senior Engineer – Communications, you will provide technical support in the preparation, analysis, monitoring and co-ordination of new projects or modifications to existing equipment as related to the design and testing of the TTC’s communication systems and equipment. Your duties will include: assisting with the preparation of estimates, material lists, designs, specifications, standards, policies, work methods, test procedures and drawings; conducting engineering analyses, evaluations, tests and making conclusions; preparing reports and correspondence as well as composing responses to communications related questionnaires; conducting investigations into communication problems; detecting new areas needing engineering attention to improve safety, productivity and cost effectiveness; keeping abreast of technological advances pertinent to the work; and performing related duties as assigned. Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service provider and an employer. You may be required to work outside of the standard work week to respond to trouble calls and other requirements. Annual Salary Range: $60,697.00 - $85,995.00 (Level 7-8) (Actual salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications).
You require sound knowledge of electrical/electronic design principles, methods and practices. Sound knowledge of mathematics, research procedures and standard/code regulations applicable to electrical/electronic engineering technology. Experience with any three of the following is required; Fiber optic cable design, CCTV including digital systems and networks, SCADA systems which may include RTU’s, PLC’s or master scada, Intercom/PA or other audio systems. Experience with computer networking and client server applications would be an asset. Must have knowledge of the Electrical Safety Authority, Ontario Building Code, TTC standards, CSA standards and other applicable codes and standards. You must possess sound judgement and proven technical design skills, and have well-developed organizational, analytical, problem solving, interpersonal, verbal communication and report writing skills. You must be proficient with the use of a computer and related software (e.g. CADD, Word, etc.) and systems related to the work. You possess proven estimating and time management skills. You must become familiar with the TTC’s communication systems and equipment and the various functions of the Communications Engineering area. The above skills and knowledge would normally be obtained through the completion of a 3-year Community College Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or its equivalent, in combination with several years of directly related work experience. O.A.C.E.T.T. certification is desirable or a university degree in electrical/computer engineering or similar courses. Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
